Under the patronage of H.E Eng. Hussain Ibrahim Al Hammadi Minister of Education, Abu Dhabi University launched the fifth annual “United Arab Emirates Undergraduate Student Research Competition (UGSRC)” which aims to showcase, recognize and promote creative student research conducted at any higher educational institution throughout the nation. In its fifth consecutive year, the competition continues to encourage young researchers and innovators to nurture and expand their critical and analytic thinking through adopting a -think outside the box- attitude to tackle topics of interest in scientific research. Participants of the annual nation-wide UAE-UGSRC will have the opportunity of presenting their research within the setting of a nationwide competition, to be held on ADU’s campus on 8th of May 2017.

Commenting on the significance of the annual competition, Director of Research at Abu Dhabi University Dr. Ashraf Khalil explained that since its inception the UGSRC has played a vital role in enhancing the culture of scientific research among undergraduate students. “Throughout its short life span the competition has succeeded in increasing the number of participating teams from 50 student teams representing only 8 universities in the first year, to 240 student teams representing more than 33 universities across the UAE by the fourth cycle. This accomplishment in itself is a testament to the scientific status that the UGSRC has achieved as of one of the top-awaited events of the academic year for universities across the UAE, with last year’s 29 winning teams taking home awards of total AED 112,000”, added Dr. Khalil.

Dr. Khalil went on to point out that this competition aims at not only promoting scientific research but also instilling lifelong learning, as well as enhancing career opportunities for undergraduate students throughout the nation. “The competition fosters a positive and self-motivated attitude among students towards friendly competition, education, research and innovation, which is in direct alignment with the UAE government’s drive towards fostering modernization and establishing a knowledge-based economy. Furthermore, perhaps one of the most unique aspects of the annual UGSRC is that it addresses various academic needs and harnesses the emerging talents of undergraduate students, covering most major disciplines including engineering, education, life and health sciences, business administration, law, and information technology”, concluded Dr. Khalil.

The 5th “Annual United Arab Emirates Undergraduate Student Research Competition” accepts student teams, which can consist of up to 4 students from one or several universities. The shortlisted teams will be selected and announced to present their research projects during the closing ceremony at ADU on the 8th of May 2017.
